In a series of urgent appeals, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has called on the United States to intervene and prevent an imminent Israeli attack on the Gaza border city of Rafah. With the city now sheltering over a million Palestinians displaced by previous Israeli assaults, the stakes could not be higher. Abbas has warned that an attack on Rafah, which he expects within days, could trigger a massive humanitarian crisis and force an unprecedented number of Palestinians to flee the enclave. This looming threat has cast a shadow over the region, with Abbas labeling a potential assault as 'the biggest disaster in the history of the Palestinian people.'
The international community watches anxiously as tensions escalate in Gaza. Rafah, abutting the Egyptian border, has become a critical refuge for Palestinians seeking safety from the conflict that has ravaged much of Gaza over the past seven months. The city's strategic importance and its role as a sanctuary for displaced Palestinians have made it a focal point in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas. With the Israeli government considering Rafah the last Hamas stronghold in Gaza, the city's fate hangs in the balance.
Abbas's appeals to the United States underscore the complex geopolitical dynamics at play. The U.S., as Israel's closest ally, finds itself in a pivotal position to influence the course of events. A Biden administration official has indicated that Israel has agreed not to invade Rafah without consulting with the U.S., suggesting that American diplomacy could play a decisi… Read more

It's crystal clear that the US has a moral obligation to step in and stop this looming disaster in Rafah. The fact that there's even a debate about whether to prevent an attack that could become "the biggest disaster in the history of the Palestinian people" is beyond frustrating. It's like the international community keeps forgetting that real lives are at stake here, not just political pawns. If the US doesn't use its influence to halt this attack, it'll be another glaring example of how Palestinians' rights and lives are continuously sidelined on the global stage.

Western countries, including Israel’s closest ally and enabler the U.S., have pleaded with it to hold back from attacking the southern city, which abuts the Egyptian border and is sheltering more than one million Palestinians who fled Israel’s seven-month-long assault on much of the rest of Gaza.

"What will happen in the coming few days is what Israel will do with attacking Rafah because all the Palestinians from Gaza are gathered there," Abbas said, adding that only a "small strike" on Rafah would force the Palestinian population to flee the Gaza strip.

Can any country truly be neutral in international conflicts, and should they try to be?
@9LXQ8W33wks3W
Countries should remain neutral until it is on the stage of genocide. Then it should be seen as an attack on humanity and hostages and victims of the genocide should be helped and a ceasefire required. Countries can go to war, but don't assassinate civilians just to have a higher body count.
@9LXPXGT3wks3W
No and no. Being neutral is a sign of cowardice and only thinking of one's own country and not standing up for what's right.
@9LXN9L63wks3W
countries need to stop getting involved with issues that don't directly affect them.
@ISIDEWITH3wks3W
What is your personal threshold for justifying military action against civilian areas?
@9LXLJVK3wks3W
Military action should not be intervening in civilian areas.
