The world hasn’t seen anything like the unprecedented destruction of housing in Gaza since World War II, and it would take at least until 2040 to restore the homes devastated in Israel’s bombing and ground offensive if the conflict ended today, the United Nations reported Thursday.
The U.N. assessment said the social and economic impact of the war launched after Hamas’ surprise attack in southern Israel on Oct. 7 has been increasing “in an exponential manner.”
It called the level of casualties – 5% of Gaza’s 2.3 million population -- “unprecedented” in such a short time. By mid-April, it said, over 33,000 Palestinians had been killed and more than 80,000 injured. About 7,000 others remain missing, most believed to be buried under the rubble.
“Every additional day that this war continues is exacting huge and compounding costs to Gazans and all Palestinians” said United Nations Development Program Administrator Achim Steiner.
The report by UNDP and the U.N. Economic Commission for Western Asia paints a dire picture of the struggle to survive in Gaza where 201,000 jobs have been lost since the war began and the economy contracted 81% in the last quarter of 2023.
I don't think there is any "solution" to the Israel-Palestine conflict. It's just a giant insoluble nightmare and we're all along for the ride
@FondCrowRepublican2wks2W
Doom and gloom is unhelpful. Israel has managed to forge functional relationships with Arab and Islamic countries in the past. Countries like America and Japan are now close allies. Israel is a close ally of Germany despite the horrific history. Things can and will change.
Yeah, just look at the glorious outbreak of "Peace in the Middle East" that was forged by the "Abraham Accords" framework masterminded by Jared Kushner and expanded by Biden. Turns out buying off wealthy Gulf potentates doesn't actually solve the Israel-Palestine conflict
@FondCrowRepublican2wks2W
Pure cynicism. Israel has a functional relationship with Jordan, Azerbaijan and Egypt for decades. Saudi normalization was imminent before October 7. Far more bitter conflicts in history have been solved
And the US tax payers are paying for this and it’s complicit now that Congress gifted Criminal Netanyahu all that weaponry.
In 6 months the IAF dropped double the tonnage of bombs on Gaza than were dropped on the industrial German city of Koln during the entirety of WW2. If that wasn't bad enough, the IDF engaged in the systematic demolition of vast swathes of buildings and infrastructure in a deliberate attempt to render the strip uninhabitable. The aim of course was to facilitate the ethnic cleansing of Gaza as well as the physical destruction of as many civilians as could be managed without too much western upset - which turned out to be quite a lot.
@R3volutionLionGreen2wks2W
Americans who are against the antiwar protests have often cited property damage as to why they are against the protests.
We must acknowledge that the greatest property damage has occurred in Gaza.
And our tax dollars have paid for it.
We should all be outspoken against this.
@F4irTradeKennedyVeteran2wks2W
So why not organize a protest and march on Washington?
I don't believe that the administrations of UCLA nor Columbia are the ones sending military aid to Israel....
It can all end right now the moment Hamas releases all the hostages.

"After previous Israel-Hamas conflicts, housing was rebuilt at a rate of 992 units a year, it said. Even if Israel allows a five-fold increase of construction material to enter Gaza, it would take until 2040 to rebuild the destroyed houses, without repairing the damaged ones."
